Back to School Tips and Tricks from Ferndale Realty

The end of summer always sneaks up faster than we expect, doesn’t it? One minute, you’re savoring ice cream by the pool, and the next, you’re hunting for backpacks and lunchboxes. Whether your child is starting kindergarten or heading back to high school, the back-to-school season is a fresh start—full of excitement, nerves, and plenty of to-dos. Here are some tried-and-true tips to help your family glide into the new school year with confidence and a smile.

1. Ease Into a Routine

Summer schedules are usually a bit looser, so start shifting bedtime and wake-up times a week or two before school begins. That way, those early mornings won’t feel quite so shocking! Consistent routines help everyone’s body clocks adjust and set the tone for productive days ahead.

2. Get Organized Together

Make back-to-school prep a family affair. Involve your kids in shopping for supplies, labeling notebooks, and packing backpacks. A shared family calendar (digital or old-fashioned paper) can help keep track of everyone’s activities, assignments, and important dates.

3. Create a Homework Haven

Designate a quiet, clutter-free spot for homework and reading. Stock it with supplies like pencils, paper, and a good lamp. When kids know exactly where to go, it’s easier to focus and get into a learning mindset.

4. Talk About Feelings

Back-to-school brings a mix of emotions—excitement, nerves, maybe even a little dread. Have open conversations about what your kids are looking forward to and what worries them. Remind them that it’s okay to feel all these things, and that you’re there to listen and support them.

5. Plan Healthy Habits

Good nutrition and plenty of sleep are the unsung heroes of school success. Try prepping healthy breakfasts and lunches together, and set a regular bedtime. Even a few minutes of outdoor play after school can help kids unwind and recharge.

6. Foster Independence

Encourage kids to take responsibility for packing their bags, laying out clothes, or tracking assignments (age-appropriate, of course). These little steps build confidence and life skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

Back-to-school season can feel overwhelming, but with a little planning and a lot of heart, it can also be a time of growth and new beginnings. Wishing you and your family a fantastic school year ahead!
