by Shawn Murphy, GRI, SRES

The history of women in real estate spans many decades and reflects broader societal changes regarding gender roles and opportunities.

1. Early 20th Century: Women began to enter the real estate profession in noticeable numbers in the early 1900s. However, they faced significant barriers, including limited access to education and professional networks. Many women worked as secretaries or assistants in real estate firms.

2. Post-World War II Era: After World War II, there was a housing boom in the United States, providing new opportunities for women. Some women entered the market as agents and brokers, taking advantage of the demand for housing. Organizations like the National Association of Realtors (NAR) began to see a gradual increase in female membership.

3. 1970s and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act: The 1970s marked a pivotal moment with the passing of legislation like the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974, which prohibited discrimination based on sex in credit transactions, including mortgages. This opened new doors for women both as buyers and as real estate professionals.

4. 1980s to 2000s: Throughout these decades, the number of women in real estate continued to grow, with more women taking leadership roles in firms and organizations. Female agents began forming supportive networks and associations to empower each other.

5. Modern Era: Today, women represent a substantial portion of the real estate workforce. They hold key positions in major firms and have significant influence in shaping the industry. Initiatives focused on diversity and inclusion have further paved the way for women, fostering environments where they can thrive as both agents and executives.

6. Current Trends: As of now, women in real estate are not only prominent as agents but also as entrepreneurs, developers, and leaders within real estate investment firms. More women are pursuing careers in commercial real estate and gaining recognition in leadership roles.

Throughout their journey, women in real estate have overcome challenges and broken barriers, contributing greatly to the evolution of the industry and paving the way for future generations.
